Cathedral Park

April 5, 2018 Sarah Rae

Cathedral Park is located underneath the St. John’s bridge, the most northern of the Portland bridges over the Willamette.  Now, a park under a bridge doesn’t sound very inviting. But wait until you see the St. John’s Bridge! Once the longest suspension bridge in the west, the St. John’s Bridge boasts Gothic Cathedral towers and graceful supporting arches, making it arguably the most beautiful bridge in Portland.  Best of all, it’s completely free.

Standing at the base of one of these massive arches, it’s easy to see how Cathedral Park got it’s name.  You can feel tingle of awe similar to standing in one of the great cathedrals of Europe as you gaze up at the 40-story tall bridge.

Cathedral Park boasts a lovely green space spread out on either side of the bridge, well established trees, ample parking and a boat launch.  Wander the paths, take photos of the bridge, walk down to the waterfront and watch the barges lumbar by, picnic, lie on the grass.  What makes Cathedral Park particularly unique is the juxtaposition of industry and green space, of the bustle of the highway above and the peace of the water below, the amazing creations of both God and man existing side by side.

Be sure and check out the “wedding deck” on the N. Edison street side of the Park.  You can approach this concrete circle underneath one of the cathedral arches by a grand staircase.  Kids enjoy running up and down the stairs and adults could complete their step count for the day by just walking up and down a couple times!  It’s a great location for a photo shoot, or even better, a wedding! My sister got married there on a beautiful September day in 2017. Even though the wedding deck doesn’t look that big, we were able to fit 300 chairs on the concrete deck and the grassy slope nearby.

So, whether for a wedding, a photoshoot, a picnic or a walk, Cathedral Park most definitely deserves a visit!

Know when you go

Lots of street parking available all around the park and the restrooms are located near the boat launch at the corner of N. Baltimore and N. Bradford St.

One of my favorite coffee shops, Cathedral Coffee is located nearby.

The  Moonstruck Chocolate factory and store is located within walking distance! Visit here for discounts on past- season truffles as well as all their regular treats!

Enjoy a meal at my favorite local fast-food chain, Burgerville, or Occidental Brewing for something a bit more upscale.
